Barack Obama
Happy New Year! I have been watching the recent presidential victory of Barack Obama with interest. Not only because of his charisma and ability to both inspire and communicate to all people, but also for his take on educational reform. It has been front page news across the world: such is the influence of the US on a global scale.
Teachers, like most people, are often skeptical on promises made in electoral campaigns to change and ‘reinvent the wheel’ when it comes to educating their nations children. This is because most of the rhetoric is simply political posturing: rarely does it lead to meaningful change. In saying this, however, Obama has set forth some interesting ‘plans’ that are relevant to parents of all nations. In summary, his ideas that are relevant to parents of school-aged children are as follows:
- Placing more emphasis at early care and education for infants. Critical to this plan is his support to the parents of young children (sounds familiar!!)
- Improve assessment procedures used to track student progress for College/University and the workplace.
- Advocating improving individual student learning (another goal of the Learning Guardian!)
- Addressing the Dropout Crisis by increasing intervention in middle school. He specifically mentions ideas such as personal academic plans, parent involvement, mentoring and extended learning time (many of our free tools assist parents to do this…)
- Expand high-quality Afterschool opportunities by doubling funding for current afterschool programs.
It’s good to see that the President has done his homework and based much of his plan on up-to-date research on effective schools. I have seen first-hand how many of these processes have worked successfully in schools. What is important to remember, however, is that the most important teachers of our children are us: the parents. The more we can do to support the work done in schools, the better the outcome will be for our children.
To finish, I will leave you with a quote that I like very much from his campaign. It sums up a state of mind that enables real change to take place in both individuals, families and the greater society: “I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington…I am asking for you to believe in yours.”
