Enhancing Children's Motivation and Engagement

Regardless as to what grade your children are in (or if any yet!), one of the most important qualities a student can possess is that of motivation and engagement.

Numerous studies across the world have demonstrated that students with higher levels of motivation have led to the achievement of higher educational outcomes.

It is by no means the only thing that children need to have, but it is certainly a very important quality!

Let’s first define these terms. Motivation is about student’s energy and drive to learn, work effectively and achieve to their potential. Similarly, engagement describes energy in action, the connection between person and the activity they are undertaking. I am sure you will agree that we all need these two things in order to work most effectively.

The question, therefore we need to ask is: How can I help my children develop greater motivation and engagement to their schoolwork? We know that what happens inside our children’s classroom makes a big difference to their attitude about school and schoolwork. However, what recent studies have shown is that it’s what we do at home as parents that make all the difference.

Consider this…who do children look to about attitudes towards school? Where does the value of attempting to do their best at everything come from? What behaviours are we modelling that will either enhance or detract from their experiences at school? Quite obviously it is us as parents! None of us are perfect, especially not me, but we do need to ensure that we are demonstrating to our children that the effort we put into something will lead to a greater sense of personal satisfaction. In a schoolwork context, if we actively demonstrate a value for learning and show a genuine non-threatening interest in our children’s work, almost all children will respond in kind.

Further to this, anyone with teenage children will know that this is even more of an issue when kids get older. Fortunately, there are a number of strategies that you can implement to address any reduction in motivation and engagement. We will never replace the i-pod, but we can empower our kids by providing them with tools to make schoolwork easier. For example, by focusing on strategies such as personal bests just like athletes do, we can take away the pressure of results. This tool works in 3 ways:

  • They are attainable by any student. When they believe success is achievable, they become more motivated;
  • Ask nothing by the students best, therefore not compromising their performance in any way; and
  • Focus students on the tasks rather than comparing with other students.
